M&G's First Carbon Neutral Stationery Turns Takeaway Boxes into Treasures
How can takeaway boxes be transformed into treasure? Based on the commonpursuit of sustainable development, M&G has joined hands with Lush Mountain Plan to launch the first carbon-neutralstationery series using recycled plastics from recovered takeaway-boxes. This is a new initiative by M&G in the field of sustainable products which carries the industry towards a moresustainable future.
The Lush Mountain Plan collects lunch boxes from local recycling centers, then packs and transports them to a plasticsrecycling plant, where they are crushed, cleaned, melted and granulated into recycled plastic raw materials. This material is finally used by M&G to create carbon-neutral stationery. During this process, M&G actively uses energy-conserving and low-emission methods, including the use of fully in-factory photovoltaic power generation to reduce carbon emissions.
This series of products is carbon neutral throughout its life cycle, from raw material sourcing, production and processing, transportation anddistribution to use and disposal. Each carbon neutral pen is made of recycled plastic from recycled food containers, which reduces carbonemissions by about 2.3g. This series of products have had carbonfootprint accounting and carbon offsetting completed throughthird-party carbon emissions verification organization Carbon Stop, and have been awarded a carbon neutral certificate.
This first iteration of carbon-neutral stationery underwent technical research and experimentation before being launched on the market. The special traits of recycled plastic mean that its expansion coefficient and shrinkage rate are different from conventional materials. M&G technicians needed to readjust the product design, mold structure and production process as a result. Starting from the initial trial and pilot test until large-scale continuous production testing, development of M&G's carbon-neutral stationery series products required about 50 days, under going a total of about 20 mold structure adjustments, product performance and process verifications before being launched as a completed product with reduced carbon emissions that also satisfied M&G's long-standing practices of high product quality, safety and other assurances.
